伝承によると、「宮村昔ばなし（宮の總宮神社伝）」に軍士ヲシテ獅子ヲマワシムとあり、今から約千年程前、源頼義が前九年の役（1051年～1062年）の戦勝祝いと併せ、宮・總宮神社（現在）の社殿を再建した時、軍士たちに獅子舞をさせたのが始まりといわれています
