485系は1965年に新大阪､名古屋―博多､熊本間の特急｢つばめ｣､｢はと｣として九州での運行を開始した。JR発足後の1995年から車体を赤1色に変え｢RED EXPRESS｣の愛称で親しまれてきた。その後､緑色の｢KIRISHIMA｣色や4色に塗り分けられた｢KIRISHIMA&HYUGA｣色など個性的な塗色も登場。
